Breckenridge Ski Resort - Top Reasons to Visit

Breckenridge has its own unique charm that will entice you and keep you wanting to come back over and over.  You will find out that you will not have enough time to everything on this list because there are just that many things to do.

1. Skiing and Snowboarding
Of course this tops the list.  Imaging coming to Breckenridge in the winter with all its enticing powder and groomed runs and not participating.  There are about 2900 acres of skiable terrain terrain wrapped up with a world class terrain park and lodges throughout the mountain.  Peak 9 has some of the best beginner terrain along with the Breckenridge ski school to teach the newbie skiiers.  The Breckenridge Ski Resort was redesigned to offer easy skiier access with the Gondola that transports you from town to the base of Peak 8 quickly and with an amazing view. 

2. Cross Country Skiing Nordic
The Breckenridge Nordic Center for the Cross Country Skiing enthusiasts boasting 32 Km of trails through the Wire River National Forest. Alpine skiing gets most of the attention but the nordic center does a great job of maintaining the trails and also allows snowshoeing on specially designed trails.  Instructors are standing by ready to teach and ski rentals are onsite for ultitmate convenience. 

3. Ice Skating
The Stephen C Ice Area located on the south end of town offers ice skating year round.  The even have an area for outdoor skating as well.  The Arena is fully staffed with skate rentals, a pro-shop, locker rooms and concession area. The Ice Skating Arena offers daily public skate sessions and lessons, plus drop in hockey sessions. Where you want to skate with the kids or polish your skills this is a great place to go.  

4. Main Street Shops
How can anyone resist the hustle and bustle of Main Street mountain style of course.  Is you stroll down Main Street there are about 200 plus shops for the tourists and the locals alike.  Mixed in with the shops are eating establishments from every type of restaurant imaginable.  They have antique shops, rock shops, souvenir shops, baby shops, and even bakery shops to name a few.  The shops are quaint and distributed throughout town so you don’t have all the competing shops clumped together.  The layouts are very inviting and sometime have very interesting floor plans that go with the architecture.  This wide assortment makes Main Street a year round destination itself. 

5. Breckenridge Recreation Center
Tucked of into the North End of town is the town Recreation Center. After a few long days of shopping and eating great food or just looking for some way to wear out the kids, the recreation center offers something for everyone in the family. Pools, water slides, exercise gym, Climbing walls, indoor and outdoor Tennis courts, outdoor hot tubs, exercise classes of all disciplines are some the activities to name a few.  It's an affordable, way to stay in shape, adjust to the altitude and have fun in the process. 

6. Breckenridge Golf Club
Breckenridge boasts a 27 hole Jack Nicklaus designed municipal golf course.  Now what makes this golf course special is the altitude of course.  At 9324 elevation the golf balls fly farther than anywhere else in the world. The other benefit is that Golf courses are typically hot but in Breckenridge you are in the comfort zone of 65 – 80 degrees in the summer months.  The club has instructors available if you want to take a lesson as well as a driving range to hit a couple of balls.

7. Hiking and Biking
The ten mile range of mountains starts in Frisco and travels south to Breckenridge.  There are many hiking and mountain biking trails tucked into this mountain range.  The peaks are actually numbered from 1 to 10 with most of the peaks around 13,000 in elevation.  The most popular 14,000+ mountain closest to Breckenridge is  Mt. Quandry. It's not a technical climb but the distance and elevation make this only appropriate for experienced hikers.  If your trip happens to fall you will see amazing fall foliage with the aspens turning color. During the summer the bike trail from Breckenridge to Vail is very popular.  It’s a very scenic trail with some of the best scenery on the way to Vail Pass.  There are quite a few bike rental shops in Breckenridge and Frisco.

8. Arts District of Breckenridge
The Arts District is located in the heart of downtown Breckenridge, perfectly accessible for visitors. The district offers indoor and outdoor spaces for events, classes and performances in a pedestrian friendly atmosphere. If you're interested in the arts its well worth figuring out which artists are currently in residence and if there are any classes you and your family would be interested in attending.

9. Festivals and Events
The Breckenridge Events calendar is full of concerts and festivals almost every month except in the mud season.  During the winter months the Breckenridge Ski Resort hosts many concerts for the skiiers at the bases of Peak 8 and 7.  Then the snow sculpture championship is held in the town of Breckenridge in late January.  During the summer the focus on the festivals switches to the town of Breckenridge.   Throughout the summer at the Riverwalk Center many concerts are offered.  The biggest one is the 4th of July parade and celebration.  The summer traditionally kicks off with the Outhouse races and then ends with Octoberfest.  Breckenridge also offers free performances on Main Street every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night throughout the summer that include music, theatre, sports and kids activities.

10. Historic District and Welcome Center
Breckenridge boasts the largest Historic District in Colorado. They also recently completed a 4,000 square foot welcome center which acts as a visitor center and history museum. The center offers self-guided walking tours and information on the historic museums throughout the town. When walking through Breckenridge you should realize that some of the buildings are very old and preserved in vintage condition.  It’s almost as though you were transported back in time.
